Love it or Lose it
By Cheryll Gillespie

If you don’t love it, you shouldn’t have it in your home! You’ve heard me make that statement before but I know, I read the emails, it’s easier said, than done. But if you truly want to live in room you love, then you need to loose all the things in that space that you don’t simply adore.

Back in the day of the infamous Dorothy May Kinnicutt aka Sister Parish, the American Interior Designer and socialite, if she didn’t give you permission to have a certain item in the room then it never made itself at home in the space. In-fact, she would show up every couple of months to edit the room. All items that had not been approved by the Queen of design were quickly removed.

Well financially this may not be possible, give it a shot in one room. And it doesn’t need to be the largest or most elaborate space but trust me, take it one room at a time, as your budget allows and you will adore the results. Nothing makes us feel better than to spend time in a room that we absolutely love and that means living with only stuff-furniture, art work, collectables, colours and accessories that you love- you can make no compromises here.

Your first step is to completely clear the space, remove everything-drapery, furniture artwork, absolutely every thing, and leave the room naked. Then paint the wall or wallpaper with a colour and pattern that you love- what’s your favorite shade and what will make you feel great when you are in the room. Then fill the room with furniture and accessories that you love. Rob the rest of your rooms, buy a few new pieces but commit and be true to the mission. Only things that you love can be in the room.

There should be nothing in the ‘new love it ‘room that you need to make any excuses for. You know the ones- ohhh that old piece or we’re buying a new one next year or I just hung that there because I had no where else to put it or I had put that vase on the mantel, it was a gift.

Afraid of the sort? You needn’t be, sorting or editing is the easy part and it should come easy. Take each item big and small and look at it individually. Do you love it? This is not something that you need to think about, either you do or you don’t. If you need to think about your answer then that probably is your answer- well you may like it you don’t love it. Don’t confuse love for sentiment. If you need to justify a piece in your home then you probably don’t love it. There is no logic here it is simply a gut reaction and it is better to have nothing in the room than the wrong thing. What and leave a blank spot for the perfect item, it will find its way home eventually.
