"So... Your family is expanding, live in a house you are quickly outgrowing, kids go to a good schools, but just can't afford to move to a bigger house in your neighbourhood?
That's was our situation.
My wife, Julia and I looked at traditional renovation, but found that it took a long time, plus we'd have to pay rent for many months and uproot the family.
That's when we discovered Modular Home Additions.
The Toronto Star featured the company several years ago and we liked their concept: build an addition in a factory off-site, deliver it in sections to the site, then rapidly install the sections - so that in just a few days the shell of our bungalow is 'transformed' into a 2 storey family home.
We saw a real home they'd done, learned more about the company and the concept and decided to take the plunge.
We had researched carefully to determine what features were just right for our family and we were able to incorporate these into the plans, working with the Modular team. A major advantage to renovating instead of moving is that the house you build is built just for you - the way you want it.
This has been one of those all-too-rare experiences when a company does exactly what it says it will do. Day one they came and removed our old roof and covered the house in protective tarps; day two came a huge crane and the wall sections began to go and within It was very impressive. Our neighbours were literally gathered around in awe as a giant crane lifted each piece of the structure into place, so that by nightfall the exterior of the second storey had materialized. Within days the roof, shingles and then tasteful stucco were completed. Work never stopped. Workers demolished the old main floor and replaced it with new interior framing and framed the second floor. Next the heating, electrical and plumbing systems were installed, followed by insulation. Soon the drywall and flooring will be applied and kitchen and bathrooms completed.
All of this work, which began on November 22nd, was carried on in cold winter weather. It is only January 24th now. All the while, our family was able to live in the basement - saving major rental expenses.
The people at Modular have been at all times friendly, cooperative and helped us through all the decisions and steps necessary to build our dream home.
We trust the Modular team and recommend it to other families who want to enlarge their homes for the future.
